Treaty Education at St. Mary Parish
Treaty Education – St. Mary Parish in Saskatoon is hosting a Treaty Education series entitled “Treaty Learning Journey – Let’s Tell the Truth.”
The second of four sessions will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday Feb. 4 on the lower level of St. Mary Parish Hall at the corner of 20th St. W. and Avenue 0 S., Saskatoon. Refreshments will be provided and a free will offering will be directed to the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund. You are welcome to bring a bag lunch for fellowship following the presentation by the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.
Summary of Session 2: “At Treaty” – The 1763 Royal Proclamation states that Indigenous People are the rightful title owners of the land. Treaties were created as a way for two sovereign nations to live peacefully on the land together; they are meant to last “as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the rivers flow.” Why and how the Treaties were negotiated and agreed upon will be discussed. We will also learn about the history of the Treaty negotiations, the numbered Treaties, and the spirit and intent of Treaties.
