Statement on the Right to Safe Drinking Water from the CCCB Commission for Justice and Peace

Living Catholic Faith

This statement was approved by the Permanent Council on the recommendation of the Executive Committee in June 2018. Work on the statement had begun in 2017 at the request of the Executive Committee in response to the problem of the right to drinking water. The statement draws particular attention to the privatization of water for corporate profit and the ongoing issue of unsafe drinking water on some reserves in Canada where Indigenous Peoples are living. Earlier this month, Pope Francis focused on water in his Message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, 1 September 2018. The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development.
