Our Lady of Fatima celebration at St Mary Parish, Saskatoon

Community gathers to celebrate Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, 2018

Representatives of different groups and cultures in the diocese gathered together Saturday, May 12 at St. Mary's Parish in Saskatoon to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima a day early.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Ciro Alfonso Perez, CSsR, and included a Liturgy of the Word for children, some of whom were dressed as angels and the three shepherd children to whom Our Lady of Fatima appeared in Portugal, beginning May 13, 1917, and continuing until Oct. 13, 1917. Our Lady of Fatima brought a message each time she appeared to 10-year-old Lucia Santos and her two younger cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto -- she asked for penance, conversion of sinners, and praying of the rosary in order to obtain peace for the world.

Lucia Santos became a Carmelite sister who died in 2005 at the age of 97 years, and is now declared "Servant of God" by the Catholic Church, a step on the road to canonization. Both Jacinta and Francisco Marto died in childhood, and both were Canonized as Saints of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis in 2017.

The Mass in Saskatoon on May 12, 2018 was followed by a public procession praying the Rosary and carrying the statue of Our Lady of Fatia through the local neighbourhood. The celebration concluded at the Parish with closing prayers and a potluck sharing of food and fellowship.
