Information Evening: Publicly Funded Spiritual Care

* Publically Funded Spiritual Care in Saskatchewan is Changing:

All faith leaders and practitioners in Saskatoon are invited to an information and education meeting concerning the elimination of the Spiritual Care Department in the Saskatoon Health Region: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, in the Main Hall at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Cathedral, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon.

To implement the government’s decision announced in this year’s provincial budget, on 27th September the spiritual care department in the Saskatoon Health Region is being eliminated. For faith leaders and practitioners this means, among other issues:

  • There will be changes in how faith based visitors become registered with the health region
  • There will not be support staff to assist faith based visitors in locating patients or to respond to patients’ or families’ spiritual care questions
  • There will not be professional spiritual care practitioners employed by the health region to care for patients from out of town or with no stated religious affiliation
  • There will be no one in the healthcare system to advocate for patients’, families’, or faith based institutions’ religious or spiritual needs
  • There will be no one to mediate between faith based visitors and the healthcare system in situations of conflict or of special religious or spiritual concerns relating to health care

Representatives from the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care / Saskatchewan Region and fulltime denominational chaplains will speak to the emerging local situation in Saskatoon and in Saskatchewan more generally. There will also be a call for volunteers to become involved in guiding the direction of publically funded spiritual care in Saskatchewan. All Interested and Concerned People are Welcome!
