Let’s walk and talk – Sept. 30 marks the first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This new federal statutory holiday builds on the legacy of Orange Shirt Day. In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad arrived at a residential school wearing her very best outfit, which was immediately taken from her. On Sept. 30, orange is worn to show that no child should have their culture and faith stripped from them.
On Sept. 30,,the Diocesan Council of Truth and Reconciliation invites you in your parish or place of work to find a partner, go for a walk, and discuss these suggested questions for about 15 minutes:
- Were you ever rejected when going to school and how did that change you?
- In what ways have you seen Indigenous people rejected in your life?
- The next time you are tempted to judge instead of listening, what action will you take?
