Forty years ago, many lay people began to study theology beyond the basic catechesis of their youth. Initially there was a lot of enthusiasm among laity and clergy alike, and a wonderful blossoming took place. Thousands of lay women and men became theologically and pastorally literate in a deeper way and began to do ministry within their parishes and dioceses. This is still happening, but in a situation where the task has changed, and new tensions have arisen. Yet the hope remains the same. This day will be a look at what the theological formation of laity involves today in terms of tasks, tension and hope.

Fr. Ron Rolheiser, OMI, is a Catholic priest and theologian, born and raised in Saskatchewan, who was a long-time popular presenter for the Lay Formation Program in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon — a program that this year has been re-named the Adult Faith Enrichment Program.
