January 28, 1988, is the fateful day that the Supreme Court of Canada struck down section 251 of the Criminal Code which restricted women’s access to abortion.
The 1969 law had made it illegal for a woman to obtain an abortion unless the pregnancy was health-threatening. This was said to be unconstitutional, conflicting with the Charter of Rights.
Canada, then, joined the ranks of China and North Korea making us one of only three countries in the world that has ABSOLUTELY no law restricting abortion. The Supreme Court did NOT acknowledge a legal right to abortion, failed to resolve the matter further, and handed over to parliament the responsibility of creating and putting into place a new law. Most of the judges decided that federal authority was to provide security to the fetus with criminal law jurisdiction but failed to discuss how the fetus would be protected.
Let us pray for the protection of human life–against abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.
Let us pray for those who have experienced these attacks on human life, or the ramifications thereof, that they be healed in every way.
And let us pray for our society, that we get some traction on this slippery slope and respect our God-given gift of LIFE!
