The bishop’s message for Reverence for Life Sunday can be found on the diocesan website at: https://rcdos.ca. Let us pray that life will be respected at every age and stage, from conception to natural death.

Prayer:

Almighty God, giver of all that is good, we thank you for the precious gift of human life:

For life in the womb, coming from your creative power,

For the life of children, making us glad with their freshness and promise,

For the life of young people, hoping for a better world,

For the life of people who are disabled, teaching us that every life has value,

For the life of the elderly, witnessing to the ageless values of patience and wisdom.

Like Blessed Mary, may we always say “yes” to Your gift.

Help us to realize the sacredness of human life and to respect and cherish it from conception to its natural end. And bring us at last, O Father, to the fullness of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

AMEN.

(Reverence for Life is supported by gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.)

* Palliative Care and End-of-life Issues – St. Augustine Parish in Saskatoon will host a Horizons of Hope workshop about palliative care and end-of-life issues Saturday, March 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 4  p.m. Developed by the Catholic Bishops of Canada,Horizons of Hope: A Toolkit for Catholic Parishes on Palliative Care” is designed to raise awareness and understanding, and to help each of us – parishioners, caregivers, the sick and dying, and/or family members – to find support and concrete assistance. To register, please contact the parish office: e-mail Jackie St Pierre at jstpierre@rcdos.ca or call (306) 373-3453. (lunch and refreshments will be provided). Everyone is welcome to the workshop at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 602 Boychuk Drive, Saskatoon.

Background: When confronted with a life-limiting diagnosis, we can find ourselves in an unfamiliar and even frightening situation. These moments are usually marked by having to make numerous practical decisions surrounding care and support for loved ones and ourselves. More often than not, such decisions require moral discernment through the lens of our faith. We believe in the dignity and sacredness of human life at all stages, from conception to natural death. At the same time, our faith does not demand that life is to be sustained at all costs. As Catholics, our faith in Jesus Christ has much to teach us about living and dying well. For more information about holding this workshop for your parish or group, please contact Jackie Saretsky in the diocesan Office of Hospital Chaplaincy: jsaretsky@rcdos.ca or (306) 659-5839.  (Hospital Chaplaincy is supported by gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal).

Hope in Health Care: support for health care professionalsThe Catholic Health Association of Saskatchewan (CHAS), in partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, invites healthcare professionals to “Hope in Health Care” to explore the challenges and opportunities in living their vocations in a healthcare environment that includes practices such as medically-provided euthanasia (MAID). Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Jackie Saretsky, diocesan Coordinator of Hospital Chaplaincy at (306) 659- 5839 or Dr. Mary Heilman, PhD, of CHAS at (306) 655-5197 or e-mail hope@chassk.ca. (Hospital Chaplaincy is supported by gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.)

* The World Day of Consecrated Life is marked each year on Feb. 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Bishop Mark Hagemoen will celebrate Mass at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon, praying for all consecrated religious women and men, with fellowship afterwards. Everyone is welcome to join in person at the Cathedral Feb. 2 or to pray live or later via live-stream video at https://saskatoonmass.com .

After Mass, there will be a time of fellowship in the hall.

Pope Saint John Paul II instituted this day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life in 1997. The Feast of the Presentation is also known as Candlemass Day; a day on which candles are traditionally blessed, symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ in our world.

We thank God for the witness and service of consecrated men and women around the world and in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon!

(Vocations is supported by gifts to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.)
